UNION ELECTIONS

Every three years, Local 8D elects new union officers. Running for union office is a great way to get more involved. We strongly encourage everyone to consider running and to vote in the upcoming elections.

There are 15 officer positions up for election: President, Secretary-Treasurer, Recorder, and 12 Vice Presidents (six from Southern and six from Martignetti). A secret ballot election for these positions will be conducted at the membership meeting on Friday, November 6, 2026 at 8:30 AM at the Taunton Hotel and Conference Center. The term is for three years and will begin on January 1, 2027. Please note that there will be no proxy voting. Voting must be done in person by secret ballot at the meeting.

Nominations will be conducted by petition. If you would like to run for office, return the enclosed Nomination Petition by Monday, November 2, 2026. In order to be eligible for nomination or election to any office, you must have been an active and continuous member of Local 8D since at least November 2025 or an active and continuous member of the UFCW International Union since at least November 2024. The petition must be signed by at least six active members. You must include your name and the desired position – President, Secretary-Treasurer, Recorder, or Vice President – at the top of the form and have members clearly print and sign their names. You cannot run for more than one office.

Please return a copy of your petition form by email to local8d@gmail.com. Petitions must be received by Monday, November 2, 2026. If your petition is not received by that date, your name will not be included on the ballot. Your original nomination petition form with the required signatures must also be returned by mail to: UFCW Local 8D, c/o Teresa Sullivan, Segal Roitman LLP, 33 Harrison Avenue, 7th Floor, Boston, MA 02111.

SCHOLARSHIP DRAWING

Each year Local 8D provides ten scholarships to college students whose parents are union members. Each winner will receive $1,500. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in a college program this 2025-2026 academic year. Students who received awards in each of the last two drawings are not eligible to participate in this drawing but can reapply next year. If your child’s name is drawn, they must produce proof of enrollment to actually receive the award. Proof can be any document that demonstrates that your child is actually enrolled in the current year.

If you have an eligible college student, return the enclosed Scholarship Application form by Monday, November 2, 2026. Applications must be submitted electronically through the Local 8D website at www.ufcwlocal8d.com/scholarships or by email to local8d@gmail.com. Late applications will not be entered into the drawing.

UFCW DISTILLERY, WINE AND ALLIED WORKERS CONFERENCE

Vice President Tom Tellier attended the first UFCW Distillery, Wine and Allied Workers Division Conference in Louisville, Kentucky this year. Over 30 representatives from UFCW locals in the division attended the conference including Tom Tellier representing Local 8D. The conference focused on organizing and bargaining tactics within the industry.

YOUR RIGHT TO UNION REPRESENTATION

Because you have a union, you have the right to have a union representative present any time you are questioned or asked to attend a meeting with management that you believe could lead to discipline. You also have a right to have a union representative present for any discussions with management related to giving up or trading your accounts. Management does not have to advise you of these rights or ask if you want a union representative present. You have to ask. Please exercise these rights by requesting union representation!

BECK NOTICE

This notice is required by law to advise all individuals employed in a bargaining unit represented by UFCW, Local 8D and working under a collective bargaining agreement requiring the payment of dues or fees as a condition of employment of: 1) their right to become a member of the union or to become a non-member “fair share” fee payer; 2) their right as a fair share fee payer to object to the payment of that portion of dues that is related to non-representational activities of the union and to obtain a reduction in dues for such activities; 3) their right to be given sufficient information to intelligently decide whether to object; and 4) their right to be apprised of the procedures that must be followed to file an objection. Under federal law you have the right to join the union as a full-fledged member or to become a fair share fee payer. Fair share fee payers give up many benefits that only union members receive. For example, fair share fee payers may not attend union meetings; vote on collective bargaining agreements; elect union officers; run for union office; or be eligible for other benefits available only to members and their families such as scholarships. Individuals may obtain the procedures that must be followed to file an objection, and further information, by writing to UFCW Local 8D, c/o Segal Roitman, LLP, 33 Harrison Avenue, 7th Floor, Boston, MA 02111.
